The voice of American-born Josephine Baker, considered the world’s first black super star will resonate today in front of the Pantheon Monument in Paris.

Baker, who was born in St. Louis, Missouri and who died in France in 1976 at the age of 68, is being symbolically inducted into the Pantheon, becoming the first Black woman to receive France’s highest honor.

French President Emmanuel Macron made the decision in August calling Baker an “exceptional figure” who “embodies the French spirit.”

Baker is also the first American and first performer to be immortalized into the Pantheon and will join the likes of scientist Marie Curie and writer Victor Hugo.

Baker is also being noted for her active role in the French Resistance during World War ll and her actions as a civil right activist.
