The Durham Region has confirmed a case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, the fifth known case confirmed in the province.

Health Officials say the person who tested positive is a close contact of a traveller who recently returned from a southern African country considered by Canada to be high-risk for the variant.

Durham’s health department says it’s also monitoring other COVID-19 cases under investigation because of recent travel history, but didn’t say how many are being investigated.

Medical officer of health for the region, Dr. Robert Kyle says the new variant is no reason for alarm but people should stay vigilant and follow public health rules.

Four Omicron cases have also been found in Ottawa, and other cases have been confirmed in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec.

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore said there are now 1,800 people under mandatory self-isolation who recently arrived in Canada from one of the ten African countries now banned from entering Canada.

And he added it’s just a matter of time before more cases are detected in the province.

Many countries have implemented travel measures to contain the new variant, though not much is yet known about its characteristics.
