Canada’s new Defence Minister Anita Anand and Chief of Defence Staff General Wayne Eyre will deliver a formal apology to survivors of sexual misconduct in the military December 13.
”All Defence Team members should be treated fairly in a workplace that is safe and free of any king of harassment and discrimination,” reads a joint statement from the Trudeau government.
”We know there is much more work to do to create lasting and positive culture change, and we will continue to listen to and learn from those affected to ensure we are taking the necessary action to make that change,” the statement goes on to say.
Anand will apologize on behalf of the government, Deputy Defence Minister Jody Thomas on behalf of the Defence Department, while General Eyre will do so on behalf of the armed forces.
Meanwhile, the military’s former commander in charge of military human resources, Vice-Admiral Haydn Edmundson has been charged with sex assault and committing indecent acts.
He denies the allegations, made public in March of this year, which date back 30 years.
