In an effort to fight off a recent surge in cases that local health officials suspect is linked to the Omicron variant, restrictions are being tightened in the Kingston region as it deals with the highest rate of infections in Ontario.
The medical officer of health for the area has announced that as of 6 p.m. tonight until next Monday, indoor and outdoor gatherings, including public events, are limited to a maximum of five.
The order also effects bars and restaurants which must be closed to indoor dining between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
They cannot sell or serve alcohol after 9 p.m., must ensure all patrons are seated when served, with no more than 4 at a table and dancing, singing or live music is not to be allowed.
Restaurants will still be allowed to offer pickup and takeout at any time.
”Cases are increasing at a concerning rate and it is clear we must take further action to protect our community,” says Medical Officer of Health Dr. Piotr Oglaza.
Anyone or business that violates the order can face a fine up to $5,000 per-day.
Kingston area residents are also being asked to monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms, stay home when ill and reduce their contacts.
