With cases of the highly transmissible Omicron variant soaring around the world, the Trudeau government increasing testing requirement for international travellers.
Starting Tuesday, all travellers will again need to get a COVID-19 molecular test before entering the country.
Just last month Ottawa had announced fully immunized Canadians and permanent residents taking short trips abroad of less than 72-hours would not require proof of a negative test before returning.
That’s changing.
”As of December 21, the requirement for pre-arrival testing will be in place again for trips of all duration,” announced Health Minister Jean Yves-Duclos.
Meanwhile, Canada’s also dropping its travel ban on flights from 10 African countries – South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Namibia, Nigeria, Malawi and Egypt.
The ban will be lifted Saturday at 11:59 p.m.
”While we recognize the controversial nature of such a prohibition, we believe it was a necessary measure to slow the arrival of Omicron in Canada and buy us some time,” explained Duclos.
”Given the current situation, this measure has served its purposed and is no longer needed.”
