Canada’s chief public health officer says Omicron is the most rapidly spreading variant of COVID-19 to date and in order to counteract it, the best defense is a combination of vaccines and best public health practices.
“While we are still studying the severity profile of the this variant, if Omicron replaces Delta, it’s expected the sheer number of cases could inundate the healthcare system in a very short time,” said Dr. Theresa Tam.
She says there close to 350 confirmed cases in 11 provinces and territories so far and increasing numbers of those cases are not linked to travel, indicating community spread.
Meantime, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says he knows the current situation is hard psychologically and mentally, but adds “Canucks have been through this already and this is not the time to give up.”
