The federal government is temporarily expanding eligibility rules in order to address the capacity limit restrictions employers and workers are currently facing in Ontario and other parts of Canada.
They will be able to apply for ”Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit” and the ”Local Lockdown Program.”
”It means that if you are an employer who has to reduce the capacity of your main business by 50% or more, you will be eligible for wage and rent subsidy support through the local lockdown program,” explained Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
”And we are lowering the revenue decline threshold from 40% to 25%.”
Employers will be able to apply for these expanded supports after the end of each program period, in exactly the same way that they received wage and rent subsidy support when those programs were launched last year.
If a worker’s lost 50% or more of income as a direct result of capacity restrictions of 50% or more, they can qualify for the ”Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit” of $300-a-week.
Freeland says the temporary changes are expected to cost about $4-billion, pointing out that it will come from the $4.5-billion set aside by Ottawa in its recent fall fiscal update.
