Quebec is again leading Canada with the most new infections – 9,397.
Health officials confirm one-in-every-five Montrealers getting tested is positive.
The latest data also confirms nine-in-ten infections in Montreal involve the Omicron variant with six-in-ten positive cases among those between 18 and 44.
One infectious diseases expert says because the Quebec government did not move quickly enough to restrict contacts, daily cases are likely to top 10,000 by Boxing Day.
Meanwhile, Ontario has set a record for new daily cases – 5,790 – breaking the previous record of 4,812 from mid-April.
A member of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, Dr. Fahad Razak, says the numbers don’t represent what’s really going on.
”Public health units are losing the ability to test everyone who has symptoms that are consistent with Omicron,” adds Razak.
”So these officials numbers are probably far under what the true rate of COVID-19 is in the community.”
Razak believes we would likely need to multiply the number of recorded infections by three or four to get a more accurate picture.
