Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam will join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at 11:30 Wednesday morning for the first federal COVID-19 update of the new year.

Today’s information session follows the prime minister’s decision to hold a call with Canada’s premiers next week to discuss how governments are keeping citizens safe amid the Omicron surge.

Trudeau repeated his message for Canadians to get vaccinated against the virus as he received a third shot booster at an Ottawa pharmacy Tuesday.

Despite rising Omicron cases, other provincial leaders are not following Ontario’s premier in shutting down indoor dining in restaurants and bars and limiting gatherings to 5 people indoors.

In British Columbia, Chief Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Bonnie Henry, says warning businesses to prepare for numerous COVID absences among staff and urging them to re-activate earlier safety protocols.

In Alberta, Premier Jason Kenney says it’s a wait and see approach.

Like Ontario, Alberta is dealing with its highest active case count of COVID infections since the pandemic began.

There are more than 34,000 active cases in that province with more than 400 in hospital, and the experts say the actual COVID case count is likely much higher.
