The snow has ended. Now, the clean up. And with so much snow to clear, Toronto Mayor John Tory has invoked a special major snow storm condition.

“What we are now having recommended to us by our staff is that we begin snow removal operations because of the quantity of the snow and because of the impact it could have on safety,”said Mayor Tory.

Tory is advising people to leave the car at home for at least the next two days and avoid parking in emergency snow routes or get towed. He adds the sheer volume of snow will likely take more than 72 hours to clear.

The last time Toronto was under a Blizzard Warning was March 13, 1993 and it never materialized.

But this year is very different, and OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt is frustrated with motorists who ignored the message to stay off the roads.

“There’s maybe this feeling of entitlement that everyone thinks that everyone will stay home except for them and because of this, I’ve seen paramedics, ambulances, fire trucks stuck in congestion a whole set of plows were blasting their air horns trying to get by.”

Sgt. Schmidt says it`s been a nightmare of a commute for most but especially for those on the 401 at the 400 where some motorists had been stranded all day.

In what`s being called a historic storm, as much as 50 cm fell in some areas.
