With all this fresh fallen snow, there’s no better time to embrace the outdoors for some fun to escape our pandemic boredom, no matter your age.

One Waterloo man is sharing his expert snow sculpting skills. Matt Morris has been making snow sculptures on his front lawn for a decade and he’s posted a free series of how-to videos.   All you need are large 5 gallon buckets and surprisingly non packing or dry snow.

“My goal was to get the information out and help people have more fun, especially during this difficult time,” says Matt. “You know in the coldest parts of the winter, pretty well all the snow we get is fluffy, non packing snow and my very simple systems work.”

He scoops up the dry snow in large buckets and lets them sit for a few hours before beginning his magical creations.

“The trick is not to touch them for about three hours or even overnight and once you do that,  a really little special process happens, it’s called sintering, and that’s when the snow crystals all bind together.”

Matt has created some wonderful snow art — not your average three tiered snowman — that draws crowds to his front lawn. Among his creations? A giant seven-foot statue of Raptor’s star Pascal Siakam that rotates. Siakam responded to the tribute on Twitter with “Haha that’s dope.”

He’s also created an impressive likeness of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and much more but Matt says beginners can start small.

“Gnomes are fun and easy to carve and it’s a great first time project.”

His snow sculpting art appeals to every age.

“It’ not just for kids, I have lots of adults and seniors and boomers that are really enjoying it.”
