About one-in-four Ontario municipalities – 107 out of 444 – have public transit serving 142 communities representing over 92% of the total provincial population.
They’ll be getting an additional $120-million this year under the Gas Tax program, under which those communities receive 2-cents per-litre of gas tax revenue collected.
The government says in a statement that this one-time top up in funding is to make up for reduced gas sales during the pandemic.
In total, the 107 municipalities will get $375.6-million to operate and improve local transit, with about half going to the City of Toronto.
