We like to think we age gracefully but as they say, you are only as old as you feel, and a new Canadian study suggests that is actually true — at least if you are a fish.
A researcher with Newfoundland’s Memorial University looked at lake trout in Ontario’s Experimental Lakes Area — an open-air biology lab with data on individual fish that goes back decades.
Craig Purchase says comparing health and fertility of young and old fish showed little or no decline in the body condition or reproductive capability of the senior swimmers — meaning the fish got old, but didn’t age.
Purchase says it’s exactly what evolution predicts for a species that keeps growing after it matures and has few, if any, natural predators.
