The National Advisory Committee on Immunization now suggests children between 5 and 11 who are immunocompromised be offered a third shot of an mRNA vaccine.
NACI says evidence shows some moderately to severely immunocompromised people may have a reduced immune response to COVID vaccines.
While there’s no data on the safety or effectiveness of a third dose for children, the panel says studies have shown a better immune response in immunocompromised adults who get it.
NACI’s also upgraded its initial advice that children 5-to-11 ”may” get two of an mRNA vaccine.
With there being more data on the safety and effectiveness of the first two shots, the committee now feels children ”should” get them.
It also suggests a 4-to-8 week interval between doses, but NACI says a longer interval will likely lead to longer-lasting protection.
