With Ottawa now under a state of emergency, police in the nation’s capitol have carried out a series of raids on a site being used as a base camp for anti-vaccine mandate protesters.

Officers have seized fuel and vehicles, issued more than 100 tickets and arrested seven people. Since Saturday, some 450 tickets have been issued.

More details are scheduled to be released later Monday.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the state of emergency late Sunday afternoon.

“Someone is going to get killed or seriously injured because of the irresponsible behaviour of some of these people who are honking their horns and destroying the fabric of neighbourhoods,” Watson explained, “Imagine living through that hell time and time again for ten days.”

Meantime, an Ontario Superior Court Justice will hear arguments Monday afternoon in a proposed multimillion-dollar class-action lawsuit by Ottawa residents who want protesters encamped in their downtown to stop honking their horns.

Lawyer Emilie Tamen is representing the residents involved and says if truckers leave by 10 Monday morning, the case will be dropped.

“Many of them don’t realize that this lawsuit implicates all participants who are contributing to the noise in downtown Ottawa and that if they’re identified they could be on the hook for significant sums of money and so we’re giving them an opportunity to voluntarily leave, stop their contribution to the noise, in which case they would not be pursued as defendants in the action.”

Demonstrators have blockaded streets and set up camp in the downtown core and are refusing to leave until all COVID-19 restrictions, mask and vaccination mandates are lifted.
