She was Viola Desmond’s youngest sister and she championed her legacy.
Viola Desmond was arrested in 1946 for refusing to leave a whites-only section of a cinema in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She was eventually convicted of a tax offense but her defiance helped motivate the struggle against racial segregation in Canada. It also earned her recognition as the first woman to be featured on a Canadian bank note.
At the launch, Wanda Robson used the first $10 bill to buy a copy of her sister’s Biography “Viola Desmond: Her Life and Times.” She was also instrumental in having the conviction set aside.
Wanda Robson was 95.
