The federal government’s invoked the Emergencies Act for the first time since it replaced the War Measures Act in 1988.
Justin Trudeau says he’s done so after discussions with cabinet and caucus, all the premiers and territorial leaders as well as opposition leaders.
”I want to be very clear the scope of these measures will be time-limited, geographically targeted as well as reasonable and proportionate to the threats they are meant to address.
The Emergencies Act will be used to strengthen and support law enforcement agencies at all levels across the country.
This is about keeping Canadians safe, protecting people’s jobs and restoring confidence in our institutions,” Trudeau explained.
He adds it will not be used to call in the military, that the government is not suspending fundamental rights or over-riding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but rather reinforcing the principles, values and institutions that keep Canadians free.
According to sources, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney strongly objects to the move as do Saskatchewan’s Scott Moe and Quebec’s Francois Legault.
Kenney worries some protesters ”will be further inflamed.  And that could lead to a prolongation of some of these protests.”
While Legault says what’s happening in Ottawa is ”disturbing,” and ”harming Ontario’s economy, we do not have these problems in Quebec.”
”Now is not the time to put oil on the fire.”
One source says Doug Ford and Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey support the federal government’s decision.
