The Canadian women edged their archrival the United States 3-2 in the final in Beijing.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted tournament cancellations and games making it difficult for the women to prepare for Beijing.

Head coach Troy Ryan says the players overcame a lot to win gold.

“Bottom line, they’re getting what they deserve. They put a lot of time and effort and sacrifice, showed a ton of resilience and their getting rewarded with a gold medal around their neck,” Ryan told reporters.

The Canadian women scored a tournament record 57 goals in Beijing, which outstripped the previous record of 44.

Also Thursday, Canada won silver in women’s ski cross, thanks to Marielle Thompson.

Currently Canada has 20 medals in fifth place overall.
