There’s no bus service in Oakville as transit workers there are on strike.
The union is calling for wage increases, additional sick days and better protection for casual employees.
“We have some casual workers who have worked for the company for a while now and they’re looking to get some gains, they’d like to be full time employees at some point,” said Unifor Local 1256 spokesperson Alice Kelly.
Driver Sean Lukas says there are also concerns over safety.
“The assault rates are going up, and one of the things we have an issue with here, is once an assault has occurred on the vehicle, the passenger in some cases is allowed to stay on the bus.”
Regular bus service has been halted as well as the Home to Hubservice.
But Oakville Transit’s specialized care-A-van service will continue to operate for dialysis appointments only.
The town’s transit commissioner says its disappointing Unifor members turned down a fair offer but that officials remain open to further talks.
