Representatives with the two major bodies in the United Nations are set to hold separate meetings today on Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The meetings of the 193-nation General Assembly and the more powerful 15-member Security Council reflect widespread demands for a cease-fire and escalating concern for the millions of Ukrainians caught up in Russia’s war, now into a fifth day.

U-S Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield says Russia will be held to account for its indefensible actions and for its violations of the U.N. Charter.

The meetings come as Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin Sunday put Russian nuclear forces on high alert, and as a Ukrainian delegation arrives for talks with Russia on the border with Belarus.

On that meeting, underway at this writing, Andrii Bukvych, who’s a Ukrainian diplomat to Canada told CTV News, what’s most important about this meeting are the conditions.

“The total withdrawal of troops, the filing of criminal cases at the international court in The Hague, the U.N. Charter should be restored. So there is a heavy price the Ukrainian people have paid and are paying right now. And you can’t just let it go and say ok just go away and we’re fine,” explained Bukvych.

Fighting continues in Ukraine but the capital Kyiv remains under Ukraine’s control.

And in a late development, we are learning from The Kyiv Independent, via the Ukrainian Navy, the Snake Island border guards are alive and were taken prisoner by Russia.

It was widely reported on Friday they had been killed after telling a Russia warship to “Go F**k yourself”.

Canada is sending more help to Ukrainians trying to hold off the Russia advance.

The government announced sending $25-million in non-lethal aid.

The supplies include night-vision goggles, body armor and gas masks.

Meantime, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly is warning of disinformation being put out by Russian state owned outlets.

Joly is advising anyone with friends and family in Russia to pass along news that hasn’t been filtered through the Russian government lens.
