The Ford government is making public transit cheaper.

It’s the latest pre-election announcement by the Ford government following the elimination of licence plate stickers and tolls being removed on two highways.

Ontario is scrapping some local transit fares for riders using GO Transit to connect to and from their local system.

Students will also get a bigger discount.

Starting March 14, local transit in some communities will be free for riders connecting to and from GO Transit on municipal transit systems.

GO Transit is also introducing an Affordability Pilot for low-income riders, starting with Peel Region residents who are enrolled in the region’s Affordable Transit Program.

The NDP points out Toronto is excluded as the government cut TTC-GO Transit fare integration 2 years ago.

The opposition wants to see a flat fare across all local GTHA transit systems.
