New York’s Metropolitan Opera is no longer working with one of their top guest singers and biggest box office draws.

Soprano Anna Netrebko has withdrawn from her future engagements with the company rather than repudiate her support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Peter Gelb, Met Opera’s general manager, says with what’s happening in Ukraine, there was ”no way forward” after announcing the company would would not engage artists who support Putin.

The 50-year-old Netrebko received the People’s Artist of Russia honour from Putin in 2008 and was a supporter of his annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Her support for Putin has also lead to the cancellation of her pending European appearances.
