With Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine now at 2 weeks, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Berlin, where he meets Wednesday with Germany’s new chancellor Olaf Scholz about the war.
Earlier in the day, Trudeau spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time in almost a week.
Zelenskyy tweeted that he talked with his friend Justin Trudeau about defence co-operation and how to increase sanctions pressure on Russia.
He says he and Trudeau agreed on further diplomatic steps, and that “Canada stands with Ukraine. We feel it every day.”
Trudeau has praised Zelenskyy’s resilience and leadership as his forces try to fend off an invasion by the largest military in Europe.
On Tuesday, Zelenskyy released a new video showing him standing near the presidential offices in Kyiv in front of piles of sandbags, a few cars and a snow-dusted fir tree.
“Snow fell. It’s that kind of springtime,” he said, softly. “You see, it’s that kind of wartime, that kind of springtime. Harsh. But we will win.”
