Gas thefts are reportedly on the rise.

Ontario’s Police Chiefs are working with the convenience store industry to call on the province to help curb gas and dash at the pump. Association spokesperson Joe Couto wants new legislation that requires people to pre-pay at the pump.

“It would really prevent a lot of ‘gas and dash’ and primarily for us, it’s an issue of safety of the folks who work at gas stations but for our police services, it represents a significant cost to not only respond, but to investigate,” said Couto.

Similar protocols are already in place in BC and Alberta.

Prices dropped .15 a litre across the G-T-A at midnight last night now selling for just under a $1.76 a litre for regular and it will drop another .6 cents a litre at midnight Friday.
