We here in Ontario will be able to get free COVID-19 rapid tests at select grocery stores and pharmacies until at least the end of July.

The program had been scheduled to last for no fewer than eight weeks when it began in February.

Now, staff in Health Minister Christine Elliott’s office say it’s being extended.

The commitment comes as opposition politicians at Queen’s Park call on the governing PCs to expand access to PCR tests for the virus.

At the same time, some of Ontario’s medical officers of health are advising residents to keep wearing masks in indoor public settings in light of rising COVID-19 trends.

Dr. Vera Etches, medical officer of health for Ottawa, says she’s written to chief medical officer, Dr. Kieran Moore, about “concerning levels of COVID-19” in the city.

The medical officers of health for Peterborough and Durham Region also recommend masks stay on as COVID-19 indicators tick up.
