The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is strongly suggesting ”rapid deployment” of second COVID-19 boosters for those 80 and older as well as residents in long-term care and other congregate settings.
NACI sees the move providing ”protection against severe disease potentially decreasing over time following the first booster” and reducing the risk of highly contagious variants.
While the ”greatest benefit” is expected in those 80 and older, the advisory panel says provinces and territories may also consider offering a fourth dose or second booster to those 70 – 79.
The committee is also suggesting governments should provide a second booster six months after the previous shot, but that a shorter interval ”may be warranted in some individuals in the contest of the rapidly evolving pandemic.”
Fourth doses will soon be available to Ontarians 60 and older.
Health Minister Christine Elliott will provide details Wednesday.
