The mayor of the besieged southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol has put the number of civilians killed there at more than 5,000.

The shocking death toll comes as Ukrainian forces brace for the Russian military to intensify its offensive to control the entire eastern Donbas region. Residents of the area have been advised to evacuate while there is still time.

Members of the UN General Assembly vote this morning on a U.S. resolution to suspend Russia from the U.N’s Human Rights Council over apparent war crimes by Russian troops in the Kyiv suburb town of Bucha.

And Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says his agenda is simple, “weapons, weapons, weapons.”

“The deal that Ukraine is offering is fair,” Kuleba explained to NATO, “you give us weapons, we sacrifice our lives, and the war in Ukraine is contained.”

NATO, as an organization, has refused to send troops to Ukraine or to police any no-fly zone to prevent Russia from completely overwhelming Ukraine.

But individual NATO members are supplying anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, as well as equipment and medical supplies.
