A statement from Russia’s Defence Ministry also reports the ship was badly damaged, although there was no acknowledgement of any attack.

Such an offensive would deal a major blow to Vladmir Putin’s war efforts, seven weeks after his illegal invasion began.

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces are expected to leave for Poland today to help Ukrainian refugees.

And Defence Minister Anita Anand is scheduled on Thursday morning to announce the deployment of these troops at Canadian Forces Base Trenton.

An unnamed government source is quoted by The Canadian Press as saying these soldiers will assist with the care and coordination of Ukrainian refugees in Poland and will also help Ukrainians leave Poland for other destinations.

The Trudeau Liberals say they have prioritized immigration applications from Ukraine and created a special program that lets Ukrainian citizens and their families come to Canada to work or study for three years.
