The  International Legion of Defense of Ukraine says Canadians make up one of the largest group of volunteers next to those from the United States and Britain.

An estimated 20-thousand people from 52 countries have joined the group to help Ukrainians fight the Russian invasion.

Former Liberal M-P Borys Wrzesnewskyj says about 15-hundred Canadians have formally applied to join the international legion.

Meantime, In what one company commander calls an intense, but gratifying mission, roughly 100 Canadian soldiers are deploying to Poland to help Ukrainian refugees there.

Major Ryan Pridmore of the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry says all the troops from Edmonton and Trenton, Ontario are “exceedingly happy” to start helping make a difference at reception centres in Poland, where they’ll support the humanitarian efforts of the Polish Territorial Defence Force.

In addition, the Canadian Armed Forces members will work with Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada as a liaison to support temporary residence for Ukrainians who want to come to Canada to work or study.
