He was a pianist of rare refinement whose ruminative, enigmatic performances and recordings wove spells for his listeners as he performed sitting on a kitchen chair.

Radu Lupu, who colleagues believed was one of the finest musicians to have ever graced his instrument, has died at his home in Switzerland.

Among his accomplishments; winning the Van Cliburn competition in 1966, sharing first prize at the George Enescu International Competition in Bucharest in 1967 and winning the Leeds International Piano Competition in England in 1969.

His manager confirmed his passing. No cause of death was reported, however it’s understood he had struggled with a series of prolonged illnesses.

Radu Lupu was 76.
