Ontario Liberals are raising concerns about a Conservative MPP who vowed to make abortion “unthinkable in our lifetime” while serving as a sitting MPP in Doug Ford’s government.
Sam Oosteroff, who represents Niagara West, made the comment at a 2019 anti-abortion rally at Queens Park. His comments resurfaced this week in the wake of a draft decision by the United States Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
At the time, Doug Ford was quick to defend his MPP by saying members are free to speak their mind, but that Oosterhoff’s views wouldn’t influence his government’s approach to abortion issues. On the campaign trail Wednesday, PC leader Doug Ford said he won’t reopen the abortion debate in Ontario.
Liberal leader Steven DelDuca says a politician and a father of two young daughters, he’s extremely concerned about what’s happening in the United States.
“These are rights that cannot be taken for granted, there are always those in society who are prepared to move us backwards in this regard, Ontario Liberals will not stand for that,” said DelDuca.
