At the same time, a bloody battle rages at the steel mill in the southern port city of Mariupol, where Ukrainian fighters and hundreds of remaining civilians are holed up in tunnels and bunkers.

The former President of Ukraine meantime, is urging Canada to get behind an American initiative that would authorize military force in the event Vladimir Putin’s Russian forces uses chemical, biological or nuclear weapons on its sovereign neighbour.

A resolution is before the U.S. Congress that, if passed, would authorize military force by the Americans, should Russia’s leader escalate his war.

“That is not because we want Canadian soldiers fighting here for us, no, this is just to stop the nuclear war (from happening),” Petro Poroshenko explained.

Putin has put Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert but has so far, shown no overt signs he plans to go nuclear.
