When Milgaard was 16, he was charged and wrongfully convicted in the 1969 rape and murder of a nursing aide in Saskatoon.
He was released from prison in 1992 and exonerated by DNA analysis in 1997.
His story was introduced to a new generation of Canadians with the Tragically Hip song, “Wheat Kings.
Canada’s justice minister called Milgaard “a tireless advocate for the wrongfully convicted.”
David Milgaard was 69.
