There are now 11 confirmed deaths due to the storm in Ontario and Quebec – all but one of them caused by falling trees or tree branches.

Ontario Provincial Police says a 58-year-old man was hit by the tree in Marmora in Hastings County and later died in hospital.

More than 45,000 Ottawa Hydro customers along with nearly 69,000 from Hydro One in the Bancroft, Perth and Tweed regions are still without power.

Environment Canada said Saturday’s severe weather involved a rare widespread windstorm associated with a line of thunderstorms that developed near Sarnia and moved northeastward across the province.

The storm toppled trees, downed power lines and caused extensive property damage in some areas.

Peterborough is the latest community to declare a state of emergency. Residents in the area are being asked to avoid unnecessary travel to make it easier for emergency services to respond to calls for assistance with downed trees and power lines.

Uxbridge  as well as the Township of Greater Madawaska, and Clarence-Rockland also declared states of emergency.
