Toronto Police officers and employees who’ve been on indefinite leave for failing to get vaccinated against COVID-19 are now allowed to return.

A statement quoting TPS spokesperson Constable Alex Li says the Toronto Police Service’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy has ended.

The constable explains that in response to the current public health and occupational health context of the pandemic and the unique nature of its work and workplaces a decision has been made to lift the vaccine requirement.

It was in August of 2021, the Toronto Police Service vaccination policy put 205 members – 117 uniformed officers and 88 civilian employees – on indefinite leave after they missed the deadline to get vaccinated or disclose their status.

At the time, the force said 99 percent of its members were fully vaccinated and all new hires would be required to be inoculated against COVID-19.

Constable Li says “the service continues to ensure that our workplaces remain safe, which includes continued COVID-19 measures as appropriate.”
