Five days of events to remember the Afzaal family in London, Ontario continue today with a prayer service and vigil.

It was one year ago on June 6th, four members of that Muslim family were killed in a truck attack that investigators say was hate motivated.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Transport Minister Omar Algabra joined the mayor of London in a march against hate and Islamophobia on Sunday.

Friends of the Afzaal family also addressed the crowd gathered in London.

A year after the horrific and shocking attack, Canadian Anti-Hate Network Chair Bernie Farber is calling on the federal government to take action against hate motivated attacks.

“Canadian Muslims, when they go for a walk or when they go into the houses of worship, they are always looking behind their backs and over their shoulders. This is what this (attack) has done, this hateful attack that left four people dead follows only a few years earlier of an attack by Alexandre Bissonnette in Quebec City during prayers at a mosque.

A report released by Toronto Police last month revealed there has been a 22-percent increase in hate crimes in this city.

It also says east and southeast Asian communities were the predominant victims of assaults, while Jewish and black people were the predominant groups targeted for mischief incidents, and black and LGBTQ communities were the dominant group for being threatened.
