A heat alert system has been launched in British Columbia to warn people of potentially deadly temperatures.
Last year’s record-shattering heat wave led to the deaths of nearly 600 individuals in B.C.
Mike Farnworth is B.C.’s Solicitor General and Minister of Public Safety.
He made the announcement on Monday, explaining that for extreme heat emergencies, that province is prepared to issue direct-to-cell phone alerts through the national Alert Ready system.
B.C’s provincial government has faced criticism for its reluctance to use the Alert Ready System during last year’s extreme heat, wildfires and flooding.
The B.C. Coroners Service is expected Tuesday to issue its final report on last year’s heat related deaths with recommendations on how to prevent similar outcomes.
