Over 100 residents and families will be forced to leave their homes in a west-end community housing complex after structural engineers found concrete ceilings in the units are at risk of collapsing.

The City has issued an order to fix the 154 unsafe units as Swansea Mews on Windermer Avenue. Mayor John Tory says admits this is ‘immensely’ intrusive for the residents of the Toronto Community Housing building.

“I’m told it may well be the case that this stretches all the way back to the construction of these buildings which happened before there even was a Toronto Community Housing Corporation,” said Tory. “It doesn’t really matter any of that, what matters is that decisions are being made in favour of safety of those residents and that steps are now going to be taken to make sure they are as comfortable as they possibly can be.”

The evacuation comes after one person was seriously injured last month when the concrete ceiling in their unit collapsed and struck them.

The timeframe for the work must be submitted to Toronto’s Building Division by Friday.
