JAGMEET SINGH CALLS ON LIBERALS TO HELP CANADIANS WITH FINANCIAL PRESSURES CAUSED BY INFLATION

After Thursday’s session or parliament, MPs head back to their ridings for the summer season following a tumultuous spring sitting of polarized politics and another Conservative leadership race.

But for the first time in four years, there is no worry of a summer of election preparations as the NDP-Liberal Confidence and Supply Agreement leaves little risk the Trudeau minority government will fall any time soon.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he’s happy with how the deal is working out so far, but he plans to push the Liberals to do more to help inflation-weary Canadians.

“Workers did not cause the inflation so they should not be the ones that bear the brunt of the solutions in dealing with inflation, so that’s why we’ve been really focussed on getting help directly to families,” Singh explained on Wednesday, “And what we’ve proposed is sending as much as a thousand dollars to families right away, as quickly as possible, to give them that help that they need, to pay the extra cost.”

Singh says it’s about redistributing the GST windfall the government is taking thanks to inflation and doubling the GST tax credit for families and increasing the Canada Child Benefit by $500.

We learned Wednesday, the annual inflation rate in May was 7.7 percent, a nearly 40 year high.

Conservative House Leader John Brassard meantime, says the NDP-Liberal has deal changed the dynamics for his party, which suddenly found itself on the outside of many negotiations about Parliamentary proceedings.

Despite the stability provided by the agreement, movement on Liberal bills is still slow.

Just four new bills have passed since January.

Another two may pass before MPs rise for the summer later on Thursday.
