McGill University has decided to wind down its century-old music conservatory amid rising operational costs and falling attendance.

The university says it reached “sobering, yet unavoidable” conclusions that made clear The Conservatory was “no longer financially viable nor sustainable.”

Prior to the pandemic there were more than 500 students taking private lessons. Enrolment this fall was projected at around 100. Last year there were fewer than 300 students taking lessons online.

The McGill Conservatory was established in 1904.
