The federal government is investing over $12 million in Toronto community organizations to end guns and gang violence by tackling the root causes of crime.

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendocino made the announcement alongside Mayor John Tory.

“This year in 2022, our investment is $15 million as a city government,” said Tory. “Part of the collaboration we’ve seen between the government of Canada and the city of Toronto is fighting these kinds of problems and in addressing the opportunities that rest with more affordable housing, better jobs, a stronger economy and all the other issues that we deal with.”

It comes as the city has seen an increase in gun violence.

This year, there have already been 24 gun-related deaths which is a
41 % increase over the same time period last year.

Just over a week ago on Father’s Day, one person was killed and seven others injured in four separate shootings throughout the city.
