Ottawa is partnering with a Belgian company to build a new battery facility northwest of Kingston in Eastern Ontario to supply parts for one-million electric vehicles a year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the deal with Umicore is just one way his government is continuing to support Canadians rising inflation and other global pressures.
“These are things that create and ensure that regardless of fluctuations at the highest level of the economy, Canadians can know there are good jobs there for them and a good future for them and their kids,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Ontario’s Economic Development Minister Vic Fideli calls this once-in-a-generation announcement a historic day.
“It’s particularly exciting for Ontario as from day one, our government has been unwavering in our commitment to protect the future of Ontario’s auto sector and the thousands of workers and families that the auto sector supports across the province.”
The new plant is expected to create a thousand jobs during construction and hundreds of long-term positions once its up and running.
