With about 5,000 new COVID-19 cases a day, and the peak of this 7th wave still two weeks way, the province has no plans to impose new mandates.

“Certainly if the capacity of our health system is threatened, we’re certainly not at that point, we have capacity,” says Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore. “We’re at roughly 70% of our ICU beds are being utilized and we’ve made some projections we’re at roughly 119 Ontarians in the intensive care unit today, so if that is threatened, we would recommendations to government on universal masking in multiple settings.”

Dr. Moore announced expanding eligibility for fourth doses of a COVID vaccine to include all adults starting Thursday, July 14. Anyone 18 and older who had their first booster five months ago will be able to book a fourth shot or second booster.

But Dr. Moore also says healthy residents under 60 can choose to wait until the fall for a new shot that’s expected to better target Omicron variants.

You’ll still be able to get free rapid tests at grocery stores and pharmacies, schools , hospitals and congregate-care settings until the end of the year. 5 million have not received their 1st booster.

Meantime, the city of Toronto is urging everyone to get whatever COVID vaccine they’re eligible for on a day when 4th doses have been approved for all Ontario residents over 18.

“So with this increase in COVID-19 activity, now is the time to get the next dose you’re eligible for, especially if you’re eligible for a third dose in order to protect yourself from severe outcomes and from increasing your risk of developing long COVID.” said Toronto’s Medical Health Officer Dr. Eileen de Villa.
