Drivers in Ontario are being reminded to renew their license plates even though there is no longer a fee.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt has released a video reminding us that the actual renewal process is still required even though the Ford PCs scrapped the $120 license plate renewal fee back in March.

“Have you had a birthday recently? Did you get some birthday cards in the mail?,” Sgt. Schmidt asks, “Well, one thing you no longer get in the mail is that renewal notice from the Ministry of Transportation to renew your VAL tag for your passenger vehicle, light commercial truck, motorcycle or moped. It may not cost you anything, but you are still required to go online and renew your registration.

Schmidt says officers across the province are seeing many more vehicles now without proper registration, and he cautions you could get ticketed for that. In fact, he points out some drivers in Ontario have received $500 fines for failing to renew their license plate registration.

Ontario drivers may renew their licence plates at a ServiceOntario location, online by clicking here or by mail.
