He’s planning to retire, but wants to make it clear, he’s not officially announcing his retirement.
Doctor Anthony Fauci, who has become the face of the U.S. government’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and is now 81, says the end date is coming.
“I just said that it is extremely unlikely, in fact for sure, that I’m not going to be here (on the job) beyond January 2025. So sometime between now and January 2025, you can guarantee I’ll step down,” Fauci told CNN.
The U.S. government’s top infectious disease specialist points out January 2025 also marks the end of U.S. President Joe Biden’s first term.
Fauci has been a U.S. government employee for 55 years and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984. As a result, he has worked under several Democratic and Republican administrations.
He served on the White House coronavirus task force led by Dr. Deborah Birx under former U.S. President Donald Trump, and now in Joe Biden’s administration.
Trump praised Fauci in the early weeks of the pandemic, even tweeting about the health official’s approval rating in June 2020. But by late summer and autumn, the Trump administration stopped holding regular COVID-19 briefings and Trump was often downplaying the coronavirus and publicly criticizing Fauci’s safety-first messaging.
