Basketball star Brittney Griner has been convicted in Russia of drug possession and smuggling and immediately sentenced to 9-years in a case that may result in a prisoner exchange between Moscow and Washington.
The 31-year-old, two-time U.S. Olympic champ and eight-time all-star with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, listened with no expression as an interpreter translated the verdict.
The U.S. Embassy’s charge d’affaires Elizabeth Rood called the verdict and sentence ”a miscarriage of justice.”
U.S. President Joe Biden denounced it as ”unacceptable” while calling on Russia ”to release her immediately.”
He also says he will keep working to bring homeĀ Griner and Paul Whelan; an American imprisoned in Russia on a spying conviction.
Under Russian law, Griner has 10-days to appeal and her lawyers expect a hearing next week.
