Nearly seven-in-10 registered practical nurses in this province claim they cannot provide adequate care because of insufficient time and resources.
That according to a new survey from the Registered Practical Nurses Association (WeRPN) of Ontario that also found almost half of them are contemplating leaving the profession, while six-in-ten say they’d leave the health-care sector altogether.
”I believe these findings will shock the public — close to seven in 10 nurses are seeing patients’ health being put at risk because adequate time, resources and staffing levels are simply not available,” says Dianne Martin, chief executive officer of the association that represents over 55,000 RPNs.
”Alarmingly, this is now being normalized.”
Other findings from the survey taken in early May include, 93% of nurses feel their workload has increased the past two-to-three years, 68% say they don’t have the time or resources to provide adequate patient care, while 66% say they’ve had to take on more patients due to the ongoing nursing shortage and 87% report taking on more responsibilities.
