The federal government has announced plans to temporarily ban businesses and individuals from importing restricted handguns into the country. The plan is to have the ban in place by Friday, August 19.
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly and Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino made the joint announcement that Ottawa has decided to push the ban through without Parliamentary approval, instead opting to impose the new regulations through regulatory restrictions. A permanent ban would require passage through Parliament.
“This ban is a stop-gap while the handgun freeze in its entirety moves through the parliamentary process, preventing shelves from being restocked in the immediate term,” says Joly.
The federal government tabled Bill C-21 three months ago. If the legislation passes it would further restrict legal access to handguns throughout the country.
