Russia has unleashed a new torrent of sanctions targeting more Canadian public and political figures, including the top soldier of the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command.

The new list sees Major General Michael Wright join pastor Brent Hawkes — who officiated the first gay marriages in Canada — as well as the C-R-T-C’s Ian Scott and singer-songwriter , who is of Ukrainian and Indigenous heritage.

The Kremlin says it’s responding to Canadian sanctions, including those against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, calling them an insult to Orthodox believers around the world.

Meantime, Ukrainian military personnel are fortifying their positions around the eastern city of Sloviansk in expectation of a fresh Russian attempt to seize the strategic point in the fiercely fought over Donetsk region.

As heavy ground fighting continues on the front line only kilometres to the east, southeast and north of Sloviansk, members of the Dnipro-1st Regiment are digging in after a week of relative calm.

The last Russian strike on the city occurred on July 30th.
