At the half way point of summer, MPPs are heading back to the Ontario legislature Monday for the start of a new session – the first since Doug Ford’s PCs were re-elected with a majority on June 2nd.

The ongoing hospital staffing crisis is expected to dominate discussions.

Interim NDP Opposition Leader Peter Tabuns says action is needed without delay.

“We want the throne speech and budget to take action to end the hospital crisis including scrapping Bill 124, lifting up wages, fixing working conditions, accrediting tens of thousands of internationally trained professionals, and launching a hiring and training blitz to start right now,” Tabuns explained to reporters.

Tomorrow’s throne speech is expected to address the healthcare staffing crisis that has seen emergency rooms across the province close for hours or days at a time, as well as much higher inflation than when the budget was first introduced.

Job number one Monday is to elect a Speaker.

Ahead of today’s return to the legislature, MPPs will be greeted by protesters outside.

Members of the Ontario Federation of Labour plan to attend a rally on the lawn of Queen’s Park where they will call on the governing PCs to offer more funding for public services.
